My first success in Scientology was when I was at school and having trouble with a test in Physics. I failed the test and came in second to last in my class. I was not unduly bothered by this, but my father took it rather more seriously. He collected together various textbooks that I was using at school in Physics and Biology as well as Latin, which I was not doing well at.

      Using L. Ron Hubbard’s study technology, my father started at the beginning of each book and went through it finding any words that I did not fully understand and clearing them up until I understood them fully. I really started to understand things that I had never gotten before and things became a lot clearer to me in all of these subjects.

      Subsequently I passed Latin with a “B” grade which was a surprise to all my teachers and never got anything other than an “A” in Math, Physics or Chemistry. I am now a computer programmer and I deal with Math—intensive robotics applications, so the work my father did and the understanding I gained has provided me with the skills I need to follow my profession.

      A more recent change in my life occurred when my pet dog died. I owned this dog for 14 years and loved it a lot. The dog was old and I knew that she was going to die and when she did it was not a surprise and I felt that I should not have been upset as it was better for the dog not to suffer. However for some reason I was really upset about it and felt really miserable for a few days.

      I went into my local Church and got some counseling on this loss and found the reasons that I was upset. They were not really related to the actual death of the dog, but to past incidents I had forgotten, but they still held power over my emotions.

      After the counseling I didn’t feel happy that the dog had died, but I knew it was right and was not abjectly miserable out of proportion to what was reasonable.
