About Myself

H ello, my name is Mark Loring, and here is a little bit about myself:

Have you ever wondered if there’s more to life? Or why the society around us is as messed up as it is? Or why people at work cannot be happier and more productive? Well, as an electrical engineer these were the questions I was asking myself in 1983, early in my career.

What brought me to this point in time? Here’s my story.

I grew up in the Los Angeles area, going to a small parochial grade and high school, always inquisitive about the things around me with a particular bent for knowing why things work the way they do and how to make things of some practical use or just for fun. I have enjoyed model- making of all types, playing sports including basketball and track. I met my wife-to-be, Gina, as a junior in high school and went on to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) to get my Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering (Summa Cum Laude).

Gina and I got married, went on our honeymoon to Hawaii and packed up our Volkswagen to head across country to our new home in Boston. I went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where I had received a full fellowship to get my Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. During these times, I was continually learning and getting more answers about things around me. But even during these times, I was already wondering more about people around me and how to be able to create an environment where people could have “fun” at work.

I graduated with high marks and many offers of employment. I took an engineering position in the Los Angeles area, did well in advancing as a staff member, particularly in leading teams of engineers in high-tech product development. My ability to get results led to a promotion to another company to build up an engineering department and continue in product development of electronic systems. It was at this time that I really began asking some basic questions about life. A Scientologist, who was an engineering friend of mine and could see that I wanted to find out more about life, showed me the book, The Problems of Work, by L. Ron Hubbard. I picked it up, started to read it and couldn’t put it down until I was done. What I learned about – how to really get my ideas across to others and how to improve relations with others – I applied immediately. And what results!

I knew I had found something that was really special – Scientology. And why? Simple. It worked. I’ve always had the point of view that I can be given a tool to do a job and let me try it for myself to evaluate its value. If it works, then I know for myself what can be done and will be glad to put it in my tool chest. And how my tool chest has grown.

That was 1983. Now, I’m directing a team of 100 engineers and administrative staff in the development of a specialized computer as part of a $1.8 billion contract for a new spacecraft system to be launched in 2002 for a constellation of satellites around earth. In addition, I’m the owner of a company that provides software, training and services to build and maintain the growth of happy, productive staff. Gina and I are healthier than ever, have a son in high school who’s an honor student and doing well in life. I now know more about life and others than I ever dreamed. And I’m really enjoying it.

      You can too.
